Be a True NHL Hockey Fan!
Men and sports… there is no way to separate the two. Are you one of those guys who can’t stand missing a single hockey match? Are you tempted to spend all your income, just so you can go watch the NHL Hockey matches? Admit it, you are a fan! But don’t just sit in front of the TV, watching the NHL Hockey matches or don’t limit your supportive activity to going to the matches and screaming from the tribunes. What can I do more?, you might ask yourself. Well, be a true fan, a declared fan and supporter. How can you do that? Here is how!
For starters, you should know that there are wide ranges of fan clubs and associations that confirm your fan status. For example, there is the National Hockey League Fans’ Association and various clubs that can be found all over the country. The main association basically tries to unite all fans from all over the country in order to promote hockey as a business and, obviously, as a sport. Furthermore, these fan clubs and associations are concerned with gaining the fan’s power and speaking for the fans, in behalf of the fans.
If you are a true supporter, it is advisable to become a member of such an association, especially since, in most cases, this membership is free of charge – you will have access to the world behind the ice ring, you will have the chance to discuss and debate upon the NHL Hockey world. You might be surprised to find out that being a NHL Hockey fan pays of. How so? Well, the true fans can get free stuff in case they are part of fan clubs or fans’ associations – free tickets, free news, participations to hockey events and many more. And this is quite something!
Many lovers of this sport find it difficult to choose one single team and support only that team under all circumstances. NHL Hokey basically stands for the National Hockey League, the league that gathers all hockey teams in USA. So, if you are having troubles selecting just one team, the good news is that you don’t really need to support one specific team, you can be a fan of the game itself, if you are dedicated NHL Hockey fan, with a membership at a reputable association!
So now you know: instead of being passive and sitting comfortably in your armchair in front of the hockey matches on TV, you could be an active supporter and fan and get involved in this NHL Hockey fans community that can help you meet more fans like you, find out the latest news in your favorite sport and participate (even for free) at sportive championships.
Developing Proper Poster For Walking and Running and Better Health
This interview is an excerpt from Kevin Gianni’s Fountain of Youth Summit, which can be found at http://fountainofyouthworldsummit.com. In this excerpt, Danny Dreyer shares on developing proper posture for walking and running. The Fountain of Youth World Summit with Danny Dreyer, author of ChiWalking and ChiRunning.Kevin: You are an expert at this topic, I have been to some of your seminars and I have absolutely loved this approach to walking running and it is so radically different. I want to tell everyone out there is, if you have views about walking and running I want you to listen to this with an open mind because this could possibly change the way that you approach it for years and years to come. So Danny, why don’t you tell us a little about your story?Danny: Well, basically I have been running for about 35 years. In 1991, I started off just doing ultra running; I didn’t start off with 5kms or 10 kms I just went off to ultra running.Kevin: Explain what ultra running is.Danny: Basically an ultra marathon is, any distance longer than a marathon. So it goes from 26.3 [laughs] all the way up to any amount, in fact there are some that are 3000 miles.Kevin: Wow!Danny: I didn’t do that. My distance is 50km, 50 miles, 100kms, 100miles. I have done a couple 100 milers and I call myself a retired 100 miler at this point. But, I got into ultra running and in order to run those kind of distances I really needed to learn to become highly efficient with my running.Kevin: Sure.Danny: So I wasn’t burning up all my fuel plus I was not banging myself up over the race course. Then I took my first Tai-Chi class and there was a tai chi master from China that was teaching us how in Tai-chi you have a centre line that runs down through the axis of your body, from your head to your toes.Kevin: OKDanny: You rotate through the centre line and if your posture and alignment is correct then your body weight is supported by the centre line not your muscles. And then you can relax everything else because Tai-chi is done in very aligned state, but a very relaxed state. So your arms and legs are really relaxed. The whole thing about Tai-chi is to get chi to move through our body directing it with your mind but letting the Chi move through your body. And I combined that with trying to keep my posture line really straight, trying to keep my arms and legs really relaxed, and at the same time trying to fall forward because I had been playing with this thing of leaning into the pull of gravity. To help propel me and it completely rocked my boat, I mean, I was never the same runner after that. So I have been working on perfecting this technique now for 10 years and been teaching it for about that long and we are having great results with people, you know, especially people that are afraid of injuries. When you said you want people to do this with an open mind, it’s like you know, running has one of the worst reputations for hurting people — Suspended disbelief is when you have a belief that when you think running is going to hurt you, I want you to suspend your disbelief momentarily while we explain this, but we have gotten people that have really come back from knee surgery, or avoided knee surgery, you know, all kinds of athletes that have found that not only feels better afterwards but they don’t get hurt while they are doing it.Kevin: Wow.Danny: So two things that we really emphasize and teach people in ChiRunning is energy efficiency and injury prevention and those are our hallmarks. That is exactly what we are at. Not necessarily just with the lead athletes or anything. We’ll take anybody who has never had a pair of running shoes on. We turn them into a fabulous runner.Kevin: Wow! And when you say ChiRunning, I mean, you apply the same principles to walking too, so there are people on the call who just want to learn how to walk more efficiently, this applies.Danny: Oh. It’s across the board. Walking and running as long as you are bi-pedal we call it – yes, it definitely works for walkers too and the basic principles that I learned from Tai-chi I brought into running and walking. Running and walking even in themselves have technique that is different from each other but not that different.Kevin: Let’s talk about those principles. How were you able to go to that Tai-chi class and say “alright, this is what I am learning here” and how are you able to directly apply that?Danny: There was my Tai-chi class, I’ll tell you, the first three weeks I was there and that was the class that was twice a week for an hour and a half.Kevin: Oh my!Danny: First three weeks of class, all I did was stand there. The master had me just work on my posture. Then he got me into this correct posture form that Tai-chi uses. And then he had me stand there and then he went away and you know, and talk to other people in his class, they were about 30 people in the class and everybody was at different levels.Kevin: OK.Danny: And for twice a week, for an hour and a half, for three weeks all I did was stand there in class. Yes and I kept paying and am going “what am I paying this guy for” [laughter] But I will tell you, he was trained in the old way in the old school and this was how they started people and I tell you, I am so thankful that I learned, because in those three weeks I was standing there and there isn’t a whole lot to do but focus on what you are doing.Kevin: Right.Danny: And it was fabulous. It really altered my approach to the alignment of my body. And then I had to work out getting that down while I was standing still, so that when I am moving with my running and walking, I could still feel that same stand every time my foot came down on the ground.Kevin: Got it.Danny: So when you are walking or running your weight is supported basically by one leg at a time. Every time you come down on your leg while you are running, your whole body weight is on that leg. When you are walking and you step forward, as you go on to that leg, your whole body weight is on one leg while you pick up your other foot. So that is the similarity between walking and running. So while you are on that one leg, it’s very important to have your posture correct so that your weight is supported more by your structure than by your muscles. That’s where your energy efficiency begins.Kevin: And how do you feel that posture? So how would I feel that I am in proper alignment?Danny: Well, one way to be able to feel is – - it’s interesting because what you are looking for in a posture stand, in a correct posture stand, is if you are standing beside a full length mirror you’d want to stand in a way that you could see that your shoulders, your hip bones and your ankles formed a perfectly perpendicular line and they were in line with each other.Kevin: OK.Danny: Most people stand with their hips a little bit forward, I would say 75 percent of all people in the United States and I would say [laughs] 10 percent of people outside. We have lousy posture. And our hips are too far forward as we are just standing there because we slouch a lot and things and so I would suggest, to start people up with basic posture. Stand on your two feet have them about hip-width apart, and you want to not lock your knees, it’s a big mistake.Kevin: OK, and then.Danny: Stand on your legs so stand on your two feet, feel the balance on your two legs. So one leg isn’t holding more weight than the other and then you want to balance it so that you don’t feel the front of your feet more than you heel. So you balance that way. And then you also want to balance inside to outside on your feet. So you are not a pronater caving in on the inside and you are not bowlegged when you weight is all on the outside.Kevin: Got you.Danny: You want to really create balance from the bottoms of your feet in all three directions, side to side, inside to outside and front to back. Once your legs are aligned, then you want to straighten up your upper spine, you know, where you are not hunched over, just want to kind of straighten up a little bit to where you are not pulling your shoulders back, it’s like how the marines do it that’s really not correct. You know, you just want to straighten your spine a little. Then I just have people lift up, put their hand up under their collar bone and kind of lift up their collar bone. Well this helps you breathe easier and helps you align your spine better. And then the other thing they do like in the yoga class is just, links on the back of your neck pretend like you are trying to really make the back of your neck longer and this will naturally drop your chin in a comfortable way. Then once you get your legs kind of aligned, and your upper body aligned, what you want to do is look down and see if you can see your shoe laces and if you can’t see your shoe laces, then your hips are too far forward or you need to quit drinking beer.Kevin: [laughs]Danny: And so what you want to do is if you can’t see your shoes laces, put your two fingers on your upper hip bones, they are not really your hip bones, they are your aliac crest, your pointers, put your two fingers on that and just move your pelvis to the rear so that you can see your shoe laces.Kevin: Got you.Danny: And if you do that and look into this side view, the rear view mirror at the same time you will be able to see that actually you are standing in a straight line, even if thought it might feel like you are y bent over at the waist a little bit. You are actually straight. And when you get into this where your feet are balanced and your posture is perfectly straight, you don’t feel any work going on in your body at all. Its like, it’s hard to explain, I don’t feel any muscles. When I was doing this three weeks of standing there, I could stand there and just about fallen asleep.Kevin: Wow.Danny: Yeah, you just don’t feel your body. It doesn’t ache, your back doesn’t hurt, your knees don’t hurt, you find this balance point where you don’t feel a thing.

Maine’s Shawnee Peak, in Bridgton is celebrating its 70th year and is the longest running ski area in Maine. “We are the original ski and snowboard mountain,” says Melissa Rock, Marketing Director. The Peak is Maine’s largest family-owned ski mountain and is home to the most night skiing in New England, with the largest lit terrain park/halfpipe combo along with 98 percent snowmaking coverage.
“Since purchasing Shawnee Peak in 1994, Chet Homer, a Kennebunk businessman, has focused on fine tuning the mountain’s infrastructure by adding lifts, lights and trails, improving snowmaking, buying a fleet of new Pisten Bully groomers, and adding innovative family pricing packages, says Rock. Homer has kept costs down and offers customers value for their Shawnee experience, which has encouraged continued family participation in the sport.
“Located just two hours from Boston,” says Rock, “the Peak offers more than 40 trails, four gladed areas of all ability levels, two terrain parks – including the NEW 12’ 20’ Monster Wall, a 400-foot halfpipe, five lifts, with an unprecedented big-mountain experience combined with small-mountain value.” The Peak boasts Maine’s Largest and Best Kept Lit Halfpipe, at more than 400 feet long and 44 feet lip to lip. The mountain overlooks scenic Moose Pond, and offers great views of New Hampshire’s Mount Washington and the Presidential Range to the west, and the Lakes Region of western Maine to the east. The Peak’s gladed terrain allows intermediate skiers to experience the thrill and beauty of skiing among the trees of Shawnee’s Sherwood Forest area or graduate to the advanced and expert terrain in the famous gladed areas off the mountain’s East Side.
Rock pointed out some new changes at the Peak. There is an environmentally oriented snowmaking pump, making more snow, using less energy! Also there is the improved “Happiness Is” trail – a popular beginner slope, widened by 75 feet.
“Plus there is value at The Peak,” says Rock. Everyday there is a special ski offering…some samples are, Monday – Carload Dayz: Arrive before 11 a.m. and everyone in your vehicle skis ‘til 9 p.m. for just $64 per vehicle; or Wednesday – Family Day: buy an adult ticket and get a junior ticket for just $5 more, one adult and one junior, $39; or Saturday – Saturday Night Fever: ski 7 to 10 p.m. for just $12. Burke Mountain in Vermont is renowned for its breathtaking views and ski racing heritage. Says David Gwatkin, Marketing Director, “Burke Mountain, located in the village of East Burke, is the best kept skiing secret in the Northeast. The area is home to Burke Mountain Academy, the preeminent ski academy in the country with 40 Olympians to its credit. And the Mountain features sweeping, winding trails, an average of 248 inches of snowfall each year, 45 trails and glades on 250 acres of terrain, and a vertical drop of 2,011 feet (among the elite eight in Vermont with more than 2,000).”
There have been major upgrades to its snowmaking system that provide 80 percent coverage for novice, intermediate, and expert trails. Burke also has four terrain parks to keep the freestylists in your family busy all day long.
“The Mountain offers the Snowsports Learning Center, the ski school which introduced the revolutionary ‘carved turn’”, adds Gwatkin. There is also the Tamarack Grill restaurant and bar, a retail shop, and a cafe. The Grill is known locally for superb food and offers an extensive wine list and a variety of Vermont brews, including its very own Tamarack and Bear Den Ales. The Mid-Burke Lodge, featuring the Bear Den Lounge, captures the essence of the character of Burke Mountain, with its field stone fireplace, exposed wooden beams, solid pine tables and skis from days gone by displayed on its walls.
Also, Burke Mountain “offers a variety of season-long programs for children and aspiring ski racers,” says Gwatkin. “The Snowsports Learning Center features its Burkie Explorers and Freestyle programs for children from ages four to 12. These programs are available to both skiers and snowboarders. Burke Mountain also partners with Burke Mountain Academy to offer its Junior Race Program, available to racers in the J3 to J7 classes. Young racers train and race throughout the season under the tutelage of BMA’s world-class coaches, some of whom are former Olympic and US National Team members.”
Beyond the resort, families can partake in ice-fishing on one of the region’s magnificent lakes, ice skating on a secluded pond, sledding, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, dog-sledding or take a ride in a horse-drawn sleigh.
And there is summer time too on the mountain. Gwatkin mentioned that the “area offers a bevy of activities for the outdoor enthusiast. Over a third of the state’s ponds and lakes are in Northeast Kingdom, Vermont’s expansive, least populated region, offering wonderful paddling and angling experiences. The village of East Burke is home to the Kingdom Trails, an internationally acclaimed network of over 150 miles of mountain biking trails stitched across the area’s pastoral landscape. For those interested in viewing wildlife either by boat or on foot, seeing loon, moose, deer, wild turkeys, ruffed grouse, peregrine falcons, and the cagey red fox is hardly uncommon.”
Burke Mountain’s parent company, the Ginn Company, based in Celebration, FL, is currently in the planning stages for a development that will include condominiums, single-family homes and a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course. Give a close look at http://www.skiburke.com

“Ski Butternut affords skiers and snowboarders of all abilities a diverse sampling of terrain,” says Sawyer. “Our trails include an easy yet fun-filled beginner trail which winds from top to bottom through virgin forests of Pine, Hemlock, Beech and Maple.”

“Elsewhere on our mountain,” adds Sawyer, “sliders will find a variety of wider, intermediate trails, perfect for relaxed cruising and linking long, carved turns. Other skiers and snowboarders wanting a bit more of a wild ride, will enjoy Ski Butternut’s two terrain parks. The more advanced park offers a selection of challenging “hits” and jumps, scattered across and down our “Twist” and “Westway” expert trails. For those just learning terrain park features, a smaller version is located in Ski Butternut’s beginner area. “
In keeping skiing and snowboarding costs affordable, Butternut offers savings and great value. For instance, season passes, if purchased by November 30th, are only $229 for adults, ages 14 to 65; $179 for juniors, ages seven to 13; and just $69 for kids, six-years and under. After that, season prices revert to their regular rates ($279 for adults, $209 for juniors and just $79 for kids).
“If you are not ready to commit to season passes,” says Sawyer, “consider purchasing Ski Butternut’s Lift-Ticket-3-Packs. These blocks of three daily lift vouchers can be used interchangeably, individually or together…and if purchased by December 20, will save you $10 per ticket! And skiers and snowboarders who don’t yet have their own gear, can rent complete sets of equipment for the season for just $99 for kids and juniors, and only $139 for anyone over the age of 14!”
You can also save by skiing Monday through Thursday, when lift tickets are just $20 ($20 tickets are not valid during holiday periods). Also there are First-Timer and All-Mountain packages, which include lift, lesson and rentals. Economical ski and stay packages are also available at more than 30 country inns, bed and breakfasts and motels near the mountain, starting at just $45 per person per day! “This price includes both your lodging and your daily lift ticket,” adds Sawyer.
The Mountain has more than 200 qualified ski, snowboard and adaptive instructors under the guidance of Einar Aas, director for the past 44 years.
Many youngsters learn, practice and improve their skills best through Ski Butternut’s SKIwee and miniRIDER learning programs. These special programs, which provide young skiers and snowboarders a lift ticket, lesson and snacks for the day, can be extended for five days to maximize savings.
So wherever you are in the northeast, there is plenty of quality, family snow sport fun without needing a hefty bank account to do it. Beautiful, exciting and rewarding the winter mountain experience awaits you.
Easy Traveling With your Golf Clubs
Golf clubs could be quite an expensive investment. However, aside from its cost, you also want to make sure that when you play, you are using your golf clubs that are in great condition to deliver your best game. This is why if you would be traveling with your golf clubs, it is imperative that they are protected from any damage caused by banging or rough handling. Here are a few tips to remember when you are traveling with your golf clubs.
Pack your golf clubs in a golf travel case or bag so that they will be protected. These are available from any golf store and you will surely find one that would fit your taste and budget. The two types of the golf travel cases available are hard shell and soft shell. If you would be traveling by air, it is more advisable to use the hard shell. Most airlines are willing to cover any damages if your golf clubs have been packed in a hard case first. However, you would still need to inquire about this with your airline company.
Hard shell cases are able to offer protection from demanding environments. Most of these are made with heavy molded plastic, which will help in protecting your clubs from hard throws, drops or any severe banging. The hard cases could cost a bit more than the soft cases, but the protection you would be giving your clubs would prove to be a worthwhile investment.
The soft shell cases could also be a good alternative, as long as you will be packing your clubs well. Although the level of protection your clubs will be getting would not be the same as with the hard cases, you could still ensure that they will end up with no damages by packing carefully. This would also work better if you will be traveling by car.
By packing your clubs carefully and placing them in a golf travel case, you would certainly be able to keep all your golf clubs safe from any damage that could be caused by elements or rough handling even when you travel.
Choosing Golf Clubs
Ok. Here are the basics. A golf club has three parts – the head, the shaft and the grip. A standard set of golf clubs consists of three woods (the Driver, #3, and #5 fairway woods), eight irons (#3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9, and PW), and a putter – that’s twelve clubs in all. According to the rules of golf, and we should all play by the rules, you can carry fourteen clubs in your bag, so many golfers add a specialty wood or another iron.
Now, let’s have a look at the different types of clubs.
Drivers & Fairway woods
These clubs are used to hit longer shots. That’s a basic yet apt way to look at it. If a golf hole is a par four or five from tee to green, most golfers would choose to use a wood.
The driver, or the 1 Wood, has the lowest loft of any golf club. Loft is the angle of the club face that controls trajectory and affects distance. A driver has a loft between 7 and 12 degrees. Better golfers have traditionally favored drivers with less than 10 degrees of loft, which require a lot more skill to hit.
Most golfers also carry a #3 and #5 fairway wood as part of their arsenal. A #3 wood has a loft of 15 degrees, and a #5 wood has a loft of 18 degrees. The higher the golf club number, the higher the loft. The #3 and #5 wood are commonly referred to as fairway woods, because they are most often used during the second shot of play, when you are supposed to be on the fairway.
Hybrids
Hybrids are a recent innovation to golf. A hybrid is a combination of an iron and a wood and is an easier to hit alternative to a long iron. Hybrids are versatile enough to be used in any situation. Hybrids come in a range of four lofts – 16 (#2), 19 (#3), 22 (#4) and 25 (#5) Degrees. Hybrids replace their equivalent number long iron, e.g. a #3 hybrid will replace a #3 iron and a #2 hybrid can be used to replace a #5 fairway wood.
Irons
Irons are generally used for shorter distances and more control than drivers and fairway woods. The closer you are to the green, the higher the iron you will use. A standard set of irons consists of #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8 and #9 and the PITCHING WEDGE (PW). A sandwedge is generally a good option to purchase for shots out of sand traps. The #3 and #4 irons are harder to hit than the higher numbered irons. Many golfers choose to replace the #3 and #4 iron with higher lofted woods or hybrids which are easier to hit than traditional long irons, resulting in comparable distances.
Wedges
Wedges are really just specialty irons. The first wedge is the Pitching Wedge (PW), which is usually between 52 and 56 degrees in loft. The PW is the highest lofted iron in a standard set and lowest loft of the wedges. Lob wedges range from 58 to 64 degrees and are used for close range short and high shots to overcome obstacles close to the green. Wedges are extremely useful for your short game and it is beneficial to keep a selection of them in your bag.
Sand Wedges are another type of wedge and are designed to get you out of the dreaded sand traps. They have a shorter shaft and a more angled face to get under the ball in order to exit a bunker.
Putters
As the adage goes “Drive for show, Putt for dough”. The putter usually gets you in the hole, so it can be assumed, that choosing the right putter is critical to your game. Putters come in various styles and types.: short, belly, long, bent, center-hosel, heel-toe, mallet, and so on. When choosing a putter the main things to consider are the: weighting, balance and feel. Better putters provide alignment aids to help you visualize the line from your ball to the target.
