Making Running Fun – How to Add More Fun to Your Running Program

The fastest way to lose momentum with any training program is by doing the same thing over and over without varying anything. Just imagine this, what if you were to run the same course, same distance everyday for the next 3 months-would you do it? I don’t think so. You may not even get to the 3rd week.

Lots of people say that running is tedious and boring, and that is impossible to run for life. Well, running can become a monotonous activity, if it is practiced on a mechanical manner, and without taking in consideration the human factor-your mental states, needs and desires. And those who are able to keep a consistent running program are those who address such needs properly.

Life needs variety to keep things fun and exciting, and the instant you fall in the sameness loop-everything becomes predictable. And if it is predictable-it is boring. Just like the last rerun of your favorite TV show; running becomes an activity that you can’t stand doing any more, as a result, you fall back and give up exercising.

How to Keep Running Fun and Exciting:

To keep running exciting, you need diversity, keeping workouts diverse is one way to guarantee success. Here a few ways to keep running exciting:

- Change your routes: if you are running in the park, try running on a different route and go explore new territories. This will give a fresh restart to your running like nothing else.

- Vary your schedule: if you are a morning runner, try running in the late evening or at nigh (if possible) and see what happens.

- Cross-Train: instead of relying on running as your sole exercise, try practicing other exercises such as swimming, bicycling or any other cardiovascular activity.

- Vary your distance and speed: instead of running at the same pace for the same distance, try varying your speed by increasing the intensity then cutting it back. This prevents monotony and is good training.

Of course, these are just suggestions; you don’t have to follow them verbatim. Running should be fun, and suppose to add enjoyment to your life. Keep on trying different strategies and approaches and find what work best for you.

Why Coaching Characteristics On The Baseball Field Leads To More Wins

On the surface the real job of a baseball coach seems easy to identify, win baseball games. Put the right players in the right positions, build team chemistry, and motivate them to win. However difficult building a championship caliber team may be, it?s only one of the jobs a baseball coach has. In fact, it should be the last task on the coach?s list. When I first began coaching, I made the mistake of thinking that I was teaching how to play baseball. I was wrong! What I should have been doing was setting an example and teaching kids how to build a foundation to be successful in life. I learned that during every practice, and every game you have the distinct opportunity to make an impact on you players.

This became particularly clear to me over this past weekend when I received a text message from a parent of one of my players. In the text it explained how the player was giving a speech in one of his classes and it was regarding the things that he had learned on the baseball field. It wasn?t about how to field a ground ball or how to hit for more power, it was about values he had learned that would help in life. I was blown away. I had made an impact on a young man?s life. Making a positive impact on young player?s lives is still the single most important job of a baseball coach. We as baseball coaches are privileged with the opportunity to do so.

A few years later, I received a text message from a parent of a player that I had coached stating that he was going to give a speech in one of his classes. It wasn?t about how to field a ground ball or how to hit for more power, it was about what attributes he had learned on the baseball that would help him in life. I was blown away! You see, players come from all different types of backgrounds on a baseball team. Broken homes, happy homes, wealthy, poor, etc. Every one has a different story. Baseball is a safe haven for these players where they get to have fun, learn, and be a part of something special. Unfortunately for most players, special is not what they receive, especially in youth sports. Instead they receive bitter parents, overbearing coaches, and more politics than playing time.

The blame is not solely on the coaches in the community. Parents, rules, and regulations all play a part the baseball experience. I have even seen a player that was told he was too good to participate on a local sports team. Are you kidding me? It?s sad to say, but youth sports has become about politics instead of helping young kids establish positive attributes that can help them long after they are done playing the game. Don?t get me wrong, I am all for protecting kids, but not at the expense of compromising the integrity of the game.

I heard an alarming statistic early on in my playing career. The average retirement age of baseball players is 12 years old. I want you to think about that for a second, 12 years old. My guess is that young players stop playing the game because they have had a bad experience, not because they don?t like to play. I am not placing blame on any one person, but what I am saying is that we need to do a better job of communicating with our players and be aware that we are in a position to make a huge impact on young minds.

Whether you are a baseball coach or a parent, you have this opportunity almost every single day and I have put together a list of four ideas that would be great to keep at the top of your list when working with young minds on the baseball field. First, make sure every baseball player regardless of skills level has fun while they learn. Winning does not equal fun, it equals winning. I have seen countless kids not have fun on a winning team because they get pushed to the way side because of their skill level. Most skilled, least skilled, I don?t care. Each player deserves quality attention and the opportunity to get better, make sure that happens.

Two, help players to understand that learning to be successful on the baseball field can give you a strong foundation to be successful in life. It is sad to say, but we forget that many players learn many virtues while a part of a sports team. Take myself for instance, baseball instilled integrity, determination, perseverance, and the understanding of what it means to be a part of a team. If you keep these life skills in the forefront of you mind, you will be amazed at how your coaching approach changes from winning a baseball game, to helping the kids understand what it takes to be successful and learning to persevere.

Number three, make every player accountable for their actions. If the best player on the team is late to practice, punish the team. If the least skilled player is late to practice, punish the team. No one player is subject to special treatment. I don?t care if it is a big game, sit players down if they have done something out of character. Players respect coaches who treat the team as a team. This will force your players to see the true value of the person next to them and care about each other as people and teammates.

Four, players play the game, not the coach. Your role as a coach is to be a guide and a resource. Explain the reasons behind why situational baseball is important and what will put them in the best position to succeed on the diamond. Do not bunt a player out of situation because you don?t feel he is skilled enough to get a hit. Open the lines of communication and make sure that if something is misunderstood, you take the time to explain it further before moving on.

I hope these coaching tips have been helpful to you today. If you put these concepts into practice, I guarantee your approach to coaching will change. When you want the best for you players, regardless of who is watching on the outside, you will begin making an impact that will stay with your players for life. They will appreciate your commitment, and will work harder to maximize their potential. At the end of the day, winning baseball games comes down to the coach?s ability to inspire his players to reach new heights.

Mcdonald’s Hockey Collectibles: Building More Interest in Hockey Memorabilia

Hockey trading cards may seem to wane in popularity, but if McDonald’s has its way, it won’t be for the next 100 years. They may probably have experienced spikes in demand thanks to McDonald’s hockey collectibles. These hockey cards that come from the house of Ronald McDonald are actually worth something, considering that it’s supplied only in Canada and that many kids actually don’t think much of them, leaving much of the loot and short supply to serious collectors. Many McDonald’s hockey cards are not even traded – they’re thrown away or left to rot someplace forgotten, like the attic or an old shoebox.

That is not to say that interest has never waned. Many collectors lost their love for hockey cards during the mid-90s when the market was filled to the brim. However, with the resurgence of interest in hockey and the continuing popularity of hockey collectibles including those from McDonald’s, it’s a good idea to start or re-start your collection now.

Getting McDonald’s hockey collectibles

The most popular hockey collectibles from McDonald’s continue to be NHL trading cards, the latest of which is from the Upper Deck Ice Heroes Collection. The new line features 50 cards, with special inserts that contain 51-card sets. Each pack costs .99 with purchase of selected McDonald’s products.

The number of cards contained in the card sets varies depending on the description. Cards in the Hardware Heroes set features winners of NHL awards in 6 die-cut cards to a pack. The Rookie Review and Hot Gloves sets have 20 cards in a pack while the Captains Checklist set contains cards featuring captains from the 6 Canadian NHL teams.

Another thing that adds to the excitement of getting the cards is that there are more than 4,000 official winning cards that include some important hockey memorabilia. The cards are instant-winning and need only to be verified to be redeemed. McDonald’s usually releases the new sets at the end of each year for the latest season.

There are also McDonald’s Canada hockey pucks that are issued by Canadian restaurants as part of their promotion to honor their hockey teams. These signature official pucks cost about .95 each.

Bags, Bags and More Bags – Which Golf Bag to Buy?

Golf bags are essential for carrying around all the things you need as you play golf. These would be your golf clubs, golf balls, tees, markers, towels and umbrellas.

Although they do not directly affect the result of your game, they could influence your attitude as you play, as golf bags offer you a lot of comfort and convenience as you go through the course.

Here are some types of golf bags.

1. Staff bags

Staff bags would be the largest kind of golf bags. A good staff bag would be made of leather or other durable and high quality materials and are usually a bit more expensive. They are able to contain all of your golf clubs, and still have a lot of pockets to hold other things and equipment that you wish to bring along as you go through the course.

Most professional golfers prefer to use the staff bag as they are able to hold the most equipment. They need not worry about lugging it around since they usually have their caddy to help them out with that.

2. Cart Bags

These bags are relatively smaller than staff bags but are bulkier and harder to carry around. Cart bags are designed to be transported in golf carts but have less pockets and less room for storage.

3. Carry Bags

These are the smallest of the golf bags, which are usually made from nylon, plastic or other light materials. They are constructed to contain the essentials like golf clubs, a couple of balls and small golf accessories. They are perfect for those golfers who prefer to carry their own bags.

When choosing the most suitable golf bag for you, you would need to consider the features that you need and your budget. It is not necessary to buy the most expensive bag available, as they do not directly affect the way you play, unlike your clubs, balls and golf shoes. You should carefully assess if the bag you are planning to buy has all the features that will suit your needs, while still being reasonably priced.

Why You Need More Challenging Swim Workouts In Your Life

Unless you swam competitively in the past, you may not know exactly how to create challenging swim workouts. The vast majority of recreational swimmers that I see when I head to the pool for a workout tend to “just swim.”

Just the other day I was talking with a woman who wanted to share my lane with me, and she said “Don’t worry I just swim until I can’t anymore…” She had no plan of action or workout planned, and that just seemed crazy to me. I easily get bored when I don’t have a planned workout to do, and in turn I’ll swim less and I certainly won’t push myself.

Who knows, maybe some people like to just swim laps aimlessly until they are tired or bored, but if you are like me, you enjoy the challenge of good swim workouts. You have a goal, purpose and a MISSION when you go to the pool now. Not only do you want to finish the workout, you want to beat that workout into submission so you can move on to the next challenge. When you look at swimming like that, you are bound to become a better swimmer and naturally be in great physical shape.

The basic components of good swim workouts are the warm up, pre-set, main set, and cooldown. The pre-set is not a necessity if you are doing shorter workouts (<3,000 yards), but it is a great tool I use to get my heart rate up for the main set. As far as the yardage breakdown, I’d recommend 20-25% be allocated to the warm-up, 60-75% allocated to the pre & main sets with the remainder for the cooldown.

Make sure you vary the type of swim workouts and sets that you are using so that you become a well-rounded swimmer. Focusing on only the strokes you know (or like) won’t cut it. Make sure you include some sets for the strokes you need the most work on. That’s literally the only way you will improve in those strokes. Practice makes perfect, and a great way to get a lot of practice with each stroke is to include Individual Medley (IM) sets in some of your workouts.

Lastly, using equipment is a great way to break up your workouts so that you’re not just straight swimming the entire time. I like to include a kicking set in both the warm up and main set because it gives my shoulders a short break. If you are good at kicking with a board, you may not need to use fins though you certainly can if you’d like. The advantages of using fins are that you get some extra resistance while you’re kicking and you can complete more distance in a shorter period of time.

There’s a lot more that goes into writing challenging swim workouts, but don’t worry, we’ve done all the hard work for you @ Virtual Swim Coach. Make sure you check us out at the links below!

Why People Should be Running More Often!

Running is the most accessible of aerobic sports.  There’s no question running is one of the best ways to improve your fitness quickly, lose weight, inches and feel great about yourself.  The term has been in use since at least the early 1980s when it was used to describe a more adventurous form of jogging where the runner would incorporate a variety of movements transforming a jogging session into a more demanding, enjoyable and expressive physical experience. Running is a flexible method of training.

You can run anywhere without fancy equipment. Running is inexpensive and easy to learn.  Running is a great way to start the day and it’s a great way to clear your head.  Running is for families and individuals of all ages.  Running is something that is very very hard to get into if you are unfit but gives you great results if you can just stick with it. Running is a great cardiovascular activity that improves heart and lung function; lowers cholesterol, triglycerides and lipids; and helps the body become more insulin sensitive.  Since running is a weight-bearing exercise, it may also prevent osteoporosis.  Running is made possible by the body’s structural and neuromuscular CROSS-WIRING of the shoulders and hips; we run shoulder to opposite hip.Running isn’t always easy when you start out, in fact, but most of the time it eventually becomes second nature.  Once you’re comfortable running for a minute at a time, for several intervals each time you exercise, you’re ready to start running a little longer. Here are some steps to follow before your running exercise:-

1-    Make sure you stretch a bit. This will help in preparing the joints for the physical activity that is coming ahead.

2-    Take a couple of deep breaths to enlarge your lungs and increase the Oxygen level in your blood.

3-    Do a couple of warm up exercises to prepare the muscles for the hard work coming ahead. This is important because it can prevent cramps.

4-    Drink a reasonable amount of water before starting to run as this will prevent dehydration and will prevent you from drinking too much during running, which can upset your stomach.

Jogging is running slowly, and sprinting is running fast.  Jogging builds confidence and self-esteem like few other individual sports can.  Jogging is an excellent exercise for losing weight, because it consumes calories at a rapid rate.  Jogging is a rigorous cardiovascular exercise that allows a person to burn an average of 100 calories per each mile he or she runs.  Jogging is of benefit to the body as a whole, strengthening the cardiovascular system, improving blood circulation and toning up muscles.  Jogging helps lower blood pressure by maintaining the elasticity of the arteries.Runners enjoy good health and a long life compared to their more sedentary counterparts.  Runners compete in categories based on their level of vision.  Free running is a physical art, in which participants (free runners) use the urban and rural areas to perform movements through its structures focused on freedom and beauty.  However, as free runners became interested in aesthetics as well as useful movement, the two became different disciplines.  Although a lot of free runners choose to focus on aesthetics, that is just “their way”, the goal however is still self development.  Moves specific to free running are not easy to define, as most free runners use a combination of street stunts and parkour techniques. The down side to running is that the possibility of stress fractures, joint issues, muscles strains or sprains, or tendonitis is increased.  Moreover, running is more costly for humans than for most mammals, demanding roughly twice as much metabolic energy per distance travelled than is typical for a mammal of equal body mass.  Since running is a strenuous sport, many of the residual effects are natural and, fortunately, most are treatable with rest, rehabilitation, and careful management.

Bags, Bags and More Bags – Which Golf Bag to Buy?

Sports Betting Football Tips – Win More Football Bets

Perhaps like you, I love betting on football. Each year I bet on college football and NFL football. I can’t get enough. And I win very often. Betting on football is a learning process and unless you buy football picks (nothing wrong with that), you always need to learn new things and keep up with stats and team progress.

Here are three sports betting football tips that are designed to help you win more football bets. I hope you enjoy them.

Sports Betting Football Tip 1

I can’t think of a more damaging trait than treating college football betting like NFL football betting. Even though they are both football, they are two different games.

You really need to bet both differently (more on this later).

Sports Betting Football Tip 2

Don’t just bet football parlay cards. Let me just say that I really love betting parlay cards. They’re fun. However, they are only a small portion of my overall football betting practice.

You can lose a lot of money if all you do is bet football parlay cards. Try to keep your expenditure to a modest level, say 10% if you’re winning them and lower if not.

Sports Betting Football Tip 3

Find the value. It doesn’t matter if you and everyone else knows who will win the game. There are many NFL betting lines and college football lines that are poor values.

Stay away from ridiculous lines. Look for the value in betting lines and you’ll be better off.

These are just a few sports betting football tips. Next, I’ll tell you how to win lots of your football bets throughout the college football and NFL football season.
