They’re both coupled to the front of the helmet in order to deflect pucks and sticks (and what ever else) from hitting the players face. A full shield offers the most protection, and therefore are almost as effective as cages. Half Shields, alternatively, only safeguard the upper half of the face area. They offer virtually no protection for the mouth, and only marginal protection for the eyes. You’ll find reports of participants sporting half shields that suffer injuries from sticks that plunge up between the guard and their face. Having said that, half shields remain better than nothing. The NHL is clearly advising their players to wear one, many are now doing so.

A Polo-professional will need to have at least a dozen trained polo ponies to have a competitive string, all fit and ready to play.  Each High Goal game is at least 6 chukkers (periods); hence, if you play two days in a row then you will have to have at least 12 horses, not counting the ones that may be just a little sore.  Some low goal players will have only 2 ponies and will “double up” to play a 4 chukker game.

Polo ponies are bred in Argentina and broke in Argentina and begin their careers in Argentina before heading to America or England to be sold for a considerable sum of money; however, some polo ponies are bred here in America and are American thoroughbreds that were bred for racing and either never raced or just were not cut out to race.

The same goes for the Irish thoroughbred, South African thoroughbred or English thoroughbred. Personally, the Kentucky thoroughbreds make the top polo ponies.  Personally, I prefer playing the fillies since they are less muscled and looser, just more “catty”, lighter on their front feet and way more scrappy.  The filly polo pony is less timid and just so much more aggressive in the melees.  The polo pony travels from the barn to the polo fields by van, which can carry up to 15 polo ponies.  They are tied to the side of the van prior to the games and prepared.  They are then “undressed”, walked after they played a chukker and then tied to the van to relax.

Why You Need More Challenging Swim Workouts In Your Life

Unless you swam competitively in the past, you may not know exactly how to create challenging swim workouts. The vast majority of recreational swimmers that I see when I head to the pool for a workout tend to “just swim.”

Just the other day I was talking with a woman who wanted to share my lane with me, and she said “Don’t worry I just swim until I can’t anymore…” She had no plan of action or workout planned, and that just seemed crazy to me. I easily get bored when I don’t have a planned workout to do, and in turn I’ll swim less and I certainly won’t push myself.

Who knows, maybe some people like to just swim laps aimlessly until they are tired or bored, but if you are like me, you enjoy the challenge of good swim workouts. You have a goal, purpose and a MISSION when you go to the pool now. Not only do you want to finish the workout, you want to beat that workout into submission so you can move on to the next challenge. When you look at swimming like that, you are bound to become a better swimmer and naturally be in great physical shape.

The basic components of good swim workouts are the warm up, pre-set, main set, and cooldown. The pre-set is not a necessity if you are doing shorter workouts (<3,000 yards), but it is a great tool I use to get my heart rate up for the main set. As far as the yardage breakdown, I’d recommend 20-25% be allocated to the warm-up, 60-75% allocated to the pre & main sets with the remainder for the cooldown.

Make sure you vary the type of swim workouts and sets that you are using so that you become a well-rounded swimmer. Focusing on only the strokes you know (or like) won’t cut it. Make sure you include some sets for the strokes you need the most work on. That’s literally the only way you will improve in those strokes. Practice makes perfect, and a great way to get a lot of practice with each stroke is to include Individual Medley (IM) sets in some of your workouts.

Lastly, using equipment is a great way to break up your workouts so that you’re not just straight swimming the entire time. I like to include a kicking set in both the warm up and main set because it gives my shoulders a short break. If you are good at kicking with a board, you may not need to use fins though you certainly can if you’d like. The advantages of using fins are that you get some extra resistance while you’re kicking and you can complete more distance in a shorter period of time.

One ball has even been designed to handle 70 degrees or warmer for hot weather play.

Sticks come in right- or left-handed designs. Goalies require sticks that are slightly different, since their job, like ice hockey goalies, is different from those who move the puck up and down the court.

Lastly, of course, game requires a goal. The goal is a net, like ice hockey, and the goalie stands in front of the net to prevent the puck from entering. Nets come in several sizes, depending upon the needs of the players. If a regulation 6 x 4 foot goal is needed, then these are also available.

Running Tips: What You Need to Know When Starting a Running Routine

How many calories do you burn running a mile?

Conventional wisdom says that, for every mile you run, you will burn 100 calories. But other factors play into the equation as well, including your running speed and your body weight. Generally speaking, a 135 pound person will burn about 100 calories per mile. A 200 pound person, running at the same speed, may burn 150. Obviously, the faster you run, the more calories you will burn.

Starting to run

Running can be stressful on your body, particularly on your leg muscles and knees. But you can minimize your risk of injury with a few simple tips.

Make sure to stretch before and after every run. Walk briskly for at least 5 minutes at the beginning of each run. Once you feel your body starting to warm up, do some gentle stretching exercises. Focus on steady, continuous stretches and avoid bouncing through the stretch.

If you are new to running, here is how you can work up to a 30 minute running routine while reducing the risk of injury.

Your first goal will be to make sure that you can walk at a brisk pace for 30 minutes. If you can do that, start to run at a slow pace until you become short of breath. Then walk briskly until you feel like you can run again. Continue with these intervals. You can challenge yourself by timing these intervals and working toward longer intervals. For example, maybe the first day you will run for 30 seconds and walk for 2 minutes. As your endurance increases, run longer and walk for shorter distances.

Another interval technique involves counting your footsteps, instead of measuring time. When you are first starting your running routine, you may do 100 or 200 running footsteps with 300 or 400 walking footsteps in between. Then you can work up to 400 or 500 running footsteps with 200 walking footsteps in between. Each day, try to extend the number of running footsteps and reduce the number of walking footsteps (even by just a few footsteps) until you are running for a full 30 minutes. Counting steps can help give your mind a clear focus toward an achievable goal.

It is important to not push yourself too hard. Even if you simply walk for 30 minutes and can manage to get in a couple of one or two minute runs, you are getting your heart rate up, and you will be reaping some of those health benefits. The rule of thumb is this: run at a pace at which you can still talk. If you are very short of breath, slow down or take a walk break.

Once you are running for a full 30 minutes, keep up this interval training to maximize the benefits of your running routine. For example, run at your normal pace and then speed it up for 30 seconds or one minute (or 200 or 300 footsteps).

After every run, walk for a few minutes, and stretch your muscles again.

Making the most of your running routine

Here are a few more tips to help you make the most of your running routine:

Invest in a good pair of running shoes, which will increase comfort and reduce your risk of injury.

Plan to rehydrate about every 10 minutes during your run.

The best places to run are smooth dirt roads or paths, which are not as hard as asphalt and concrete. Ask around (at your local running store, for example) for recommendations of good routes.

Finally, make sure to follow these simple safety precautions: Running with a friend (or even a dog) is safer than running alone. At the very least, tell someone when you are leaving, where you are going, and when they should expect you to return. Leave your valuables at home, vary your routes, and stay in busy, well lit areas. Pay attention to what is going on around you. That means leaving the headphones at home, or turning the volume down low. Lastly, always jog against traffic, so you can assess oncoming cars for potential danger.
