When a hockey player or coach goes overseas for a game in another country, they need to seriously consider getting proper medical insurance before leaving on their trip. Athletes of any sport are faced with many dangers when they travel outside of their home country however; hockey players tend to be exposed to more than most because of the rough nature of the sport that they play.
Falling unexpectedly ill or having an accident may result in medical services that are not properly covered by existing insurance because of territorial limitations or high deductibles. Emergency evacuation is something that is also highly recommended for hockey players and coaches because it will help in the event of the host countries civil unrest or in the event of an accident. In the case of an accident, there may need to be emergency ground or air transportation to the nearest hospital.
Emergency reunion is in case of the event of an accident so that one of the injured person’s relatives can be flown in to be with them while they are in the hospital. It usually includes one round trip economy ticket to wherever the injured person is receiving treatment.
Repatriation of remains is in case of the event that a hockey player or coach dies as a result of their injury or illness so that their body is flown back to their home country. Another great thing for all hockey players and coaches to get is the lost checked luggage insurance. This is an important one because all athletes need to have their equipment with them or at least have a way of replacing it if they don’t have it. In the event of lost luggage, the insurance company will pay to have the luggage replaced or at least the equipment rented so that the game can still go on. Airlines have similar policies but many times it takes a day or two or the funds given are inadequate. When you are flying into a new country to play a game that night, you don’t have time to wait for the airline to give you a little bit of money to replace your stuff.
So whether you are a coach or a player, it is always a good idea to be prepared and have proper insurance before leaving the country. You never know when it might save your life.

Girls Hockey Players Must Build Strength

 

Girls hockey players MUST get stronger, faster and fitter this off-season if they want to take their game to the next level.

If girls address these 3 key components in their hockey workouts this summer, they will be a better player once September rolls around.

Hockey-specific strength training is the most fundamental component of off-season off-ice player development and must be built BEFORE speed and conditioning.

Without a solid foundation of strength and stability in place, young female players will NOT be able to use their speed and fitness to their greatest extent and will NOT be able to perform at the highest level both on and off the ice.

However, coaches and parents of young female players have some concerns about strength training.

Let’s look at each of the 4 most common concerns in more detail.

Concern #1: With no body checking in the female game, off-ice strength training isn’t necessary.

‘No body checking’ doesn’t equal ‘no body contact’. Since female hockey players are not allowed to use body checking as a means of separating the opposition from the puck, they must rely on their speed and body positioning in order to do so. By participating in a properly designed strength training program, female athletes will develop the total body strength needed to win races for the puck and battles along the boards.

Concern #2: If I start strength training, I am going to ‘look like a man’.

Fundamental physiological differences between genders makes ‘looking like a man’ virtually impossible for female athletes. Females have fewer muscle fibres and much less testosterone than males, which makes gaining large amounts of lean muscle extremely difficult. Furthermore, gaining a large amount of lean muscle mass requires very specific programs that are not effective in young athletes due to their lack of physiological readiness for this type of training and their lack of strength training experience overall.

Concern #3: Starting strength training at a young age will lead to injury.

Females are no more likely to be injured while performing strength training than males. Young athletes tend to get injured when they receive poor instruction on technique or are exposed to a level of training that is inappropriate to their age and ability. Proper instruction of correct techniques, coupled with a safe and gradual progression of intensity, will actually help to prevent injuries both on and off the ice.

Concern #4: Males strength train. Females don’t.

Perhaps more important than the structured physiological development of a young female hockey player is the proper psychological development. Young females are constantly bombarded with images and messages about what constitutes the ‘ideal’ female body shape. As a result, female athletes competing in sports that require strength and power may be more susceptible to psychological issues related to body image that are not typical with male athletes. Most young male hockey players desperately want to get bigger, faster and stronger. Young female hockey players must be empowered: parents and coaches must let them know that it is to their benefit to be strong, both as athletes and as people.

Proper strength training does NOT require players to push around weights and will NOT lead to them becoming “muscle bound”. They DON’T need to join an expensive gym and they DON’T need use any fancy equipment.

With body-weight strength training, girls’ hockey players can build the strength and stability in all of the muscles and joints that support and power hockey-specific movements.

Body-weight strength training is the most fundamental component to enhancing on-ice performance this off-season.

The challenge is that players feel as though they are becoming more fit for hockey by focusing on increasing their endurance in the off-season.  Players who go for long slow distance runs over the summer will definitely develop their endurance, but this enhancement will come at the expense of their ability to perform at the highest intensity level consistently throughout the game.

 

Do You Want to  Be “Fit” or “Fast”?

Ultimately, on the issue of proper conditioning for hockey, it comes down to choosing between being aerobically ‘fit’ or being strong, fast and powerful.  Players must make a trade-off when it comes to conditioning.  They can either possess a high level of endurance or game-breaking speed and quickness.  It is physiologically impossible to develop both of these qualities to their highest extent in athletes.

Independent Professional Baseball Players: Why They Play For Such Little Money

If you have attended an independent professional baseball game then you know that the level of play is equivalent to different levels of the regular “affiliated” Minor Leagues. What is not known by many fans, however, is how little money many of the independent baseball players make.

Unlike many jobs across North America, independent baseball players do not have a union or company department like Human Resources. They can be released almost at any time, for almost any reason, and there is usually nothing in their contracts which guarantees any sort of payment after players retire. When told all about this, many fans say, “Why would these players do that?!?”

Here are a few of the reasons:

A genuine love of the game: Many players in independent baseball believe that they have been overlooked by the Major League teams’ scouting departments. They genuinely believe that they deserve a chance to be in an “affiliated” farm team with one of the Major League organizations; and they truly love playing baseball. Many fans whom have attended independent baseball games comment on the hustle and passion of the players. A player who believes that he was overlooked may play with a “chip on his shoulder” in order to prove that he belongs with a Major League-affiliated farm team.

A need to be closer to home: Often, there are a few guys in each independent league who genuinely belong in a higher level of baseball. For whatever reason, however, they need to be closer to home with a less-grueling travel schedule. Sometimes players just started a family, others need to help out with a sick family member, and others need the support of friends and family in order to be comfortable with playing at the professional level.

A desire to continue his career in baseball: Many players will play in an independent baseball league in order to gain credibility for his post-playing career. Certain players want to manage or coach in professional baseball, others want to coach at the college level, and others want to transition to the front office of a professional sports team after they retire.

A need for camaraderie: If you have ever watched any documentary about “life in the minors” then you know that the players love playing baseball, enjoy crazy antics with their teammates, playing cards in the clubhouse, and the chance to develop lifelong friends especially on those long bus trips! If a player is good enough to be considered professional then many will take the opportunity to play in the independent leagues because he knows how competitive the demand is. Other players from around the continent are more than willing to take his spot, so he knows that he part of an elite level of baseball even though it is considered to be independent of the affiliated organizations.

A chance to rebuild his career: Sometimes an extremely talented player ends up in an independent league due to an injury, salary cap move, or simply due to “politics” in organized baseball. Such a player will play on an independent baseball team in order to prove to scouts that he is healthy, willing to go back at a more economical price, or simply that the other team which released him made a mistake. In a given year, dozens of players in independent baseball sign contracts with affiliated Minor League teams; and each year a few will get to play in the Major Leagues.

The next time you see an independent baseball game, or if you meet some independent baseball players around town, now you have a better understanding of why they do what they do regardless of the price at which they play. If you ever have said that you think pro athletes need to play with more passion and that they are overpaid, then be sure to attend an independent pro baseball game.
