The big news for snowboarders is that Taos Ski Valley in New Mexico has recently announced that they are lifting their ban on snowboarding. This comes as a result of increased pressure by the public, including a campaign by Burton Snowboards.

The company offered a prize of ,000 to individuals or groups who film their illegal snowboarding, or poaching, at locations where it is not allowed. A representative of the company cautions against the manifesto of this publicity stunt being taken to the level of a civil rights matter, but there is a serious side to the issue. Snowboarders feel that they are discriminated against by the ban.

Taos defends their decision on their Facts and Answers page of their website. Complaints by individuals about the change centered around the impact on the snow levels, protesting that the snowboarders scrape snow off the trails, misbehave on lifts, and are an unwelcome presence in the community. Many others still welcome the change, saying it’s about time. Taos asserts that “Opening to snowboarding allows us to refocus on being a family oriented mountain.”

While Taos has changed their tune, three other resorts still ban the practice of snowboarding. Mad River Glen, Deer Valley in Utah, and Alta Ski Area stay focused on skiers. The central complaint revealed by these resorts is the conflict of interest among their clientele. Skiers claim the snowboarders ruin the mountain, and the experience of skiing.

Mad River Glen, located in Fayston, Vermont, still vehemently upholds their ban on snowboarding, posting a press release that declares, “Despite the fact that snowboarders account for 25% to 30% of all lift tickets sold in the United States, don’t expect Mad River Glen to lift its ban on snowboards any time soon.” Mad River Glen is privately owned by shareholders and operates as a not-for-profit entity. More than 75% of their shareholders voted to eliminate snowboarding after “legendary” events occurred at Mad River when the activity was allowed. For those who hope that Mad River Glen will eventually buckle to economic pressures, “Don’t hold your breath!”

Deer Valley’s Website, when searched using the site’s own engine, brings up links to a press release, and at the bottom of the page simply states, “No snowboards, please.” The press release reveals, however, that Deer Valley will be one of the sites to host events of the 2011 World Freestyle Ski Championships. These include a variety of alpine, freestyle and snowboarding events. It is unclear whether any of the snowboarding events will be hosted at the Deer Valley site.

Alta Ski Area, also in Utah, does not allow snowboarding. Some speculate that since the resort introduce a combined pass with Snowbird, a neighboring resort that is open to snowboarders, in 2001, Alta may eventually change their policy. At present the resort is standing firm, however, “preserving and protecting the skiing experience.”

Another reason to drop the ban is the number of younger individuals who prefer snowboarding. Younger families and older snow bunnies with snowboarding family members want to share the slopes, and this has a heavy economic impact on ski resorts. Those that turn away snowboarders also turn away entire families or groups. Time will tell what the result will be for these three remaining resorts. They may not totally rule out a change of perspective.

Many of the ski resorts of Korea are scattered throughout Gangwon-do Province, the region that gets the most annual snowfall. However, skiers based in Seoul will be happy to know that there are a number of great ski facilities just past the city limits, allowing for quick, convenient ski trips during the weekend. 

Most ski resorts are large leisure centers that offer pleasant accommodations and convenient facilites to visitors throughout the entire year. Of course, the most popular time to visit the resorts is during the peak ski season from mid-December to the end of February. During this time, prices for accommodations go up and rooms fill up fast, so visitors who are unable to get lodging within the resort complexes are advised to check out hotels, motels, or pensions (inns) in the surrounding area. 

All of the resorts on our list offer both skiing and snowboarding, with new snowboarding facilities constantly being added to keep up with the increasing demand for this popular new sport. Skiing & boarding facilities at the resorts are usually open from mid-November/early December until March or April. During these times, Korea’s ski resorts become the nation’s vacation hotspots, attracting visitors from home and abroad to the pristine mountainsides for unforgettable wintertime fun, whether that be adrenaline-packed runs down the mountain, sledding with the kids, or long, luxurious soaks in slopeside hot tubs.

The slopes at Yongpyong see an average annual snowfall of 250 centimeters, meaning that this excellent facility can stay open from mid-November to early April (slightly longer than the regular ski season).

Phoenix Park Ski Resort:Snowboarder’s Heaven
Not only known for its 21 broad meadow slopes—with panoramic views!—Phoenix Park has gained attention nationwide for its “Extreme Park”: a snowboarding park complete with a halfpipe, tabletop, round quarter, and rails. Its FIS certification and variety of facilities has made it a popular destination for hardcore snowboarders. 

The resort offers 18 slopes for everyone, from beginners to professional skiers, as well as a mogul course for the utmost in fun and thrills. The mogul course is a steep run with mounds of snow placed where snowboarders least expect them. Naturally, it is the ultimate challenge for snowboarders who want to perfect their skills! High 1 Resort:Fantastic Natural Slopes
Located in one of the most pristine regions of Gangwon-do Province, High 1 Resort offers 18 fantastic slopes each beginning at one of three peaks. Adjacent to a forest of oak trees, Oak Valley Snow Park is smaller than most other ski facilities in Korea. As a result, it offers a cozy, welcoming atmosphere and skiing slopes free from the usual crowds. The resort has 9 slopes, and operates a high-speed lift for skiers to enjoy as many runs as possible during their stay. Oak Valley Snow Park is one of the best parks for snowboarders because there are no crowds and plenty of space to try new maneuvers! The resort operates a ski and snowboarding school, as well as sleigh rides for beginners.

 

O2 Resort:Skiing for the Whole Family
O2 Resort is located in Taebaek, Gangwon-do Province, the first place the snow falls in the winter and the last place it melts in the spring. The resort has a total of 12 slopes of varying difficulty levels. The easiest slope, which starts at 1,420 meters above sea level, is 3.2 kilometers long from top to bottom. On another slope, skiers of all levels start together at the top, but split into different courses depending on their skill levels, and meet again at the base. Alpensia Resort
Alpensia Resort is situated 700 meters above sea level, an altitude considered to be ideal for the human body and the body’s biorythmns. The resort is known for its excellent snow quality and commands a great wide-open view of the scenic Daegwallyeong Range. Of the 8 different slopes, one slope is reserved exclusively for snowboarders. The ski resort’s maximum capacity is 3,000 people, so with the high-speed lift (transporting 2,400 ~ 3,000 skiers an hour) visitors won’t have to edure long lines to get to the slopes.

Located in Pocheon, Gyeonggi-do, Bears Town Resort is a great option for a one-day ski and snowboard trip since it’s only about 50 minutes away from Seoul. Ski in, ski out accommodation isn’t really a concept the Americans have conquered yet, but more options are gradully creeping in to Colorado’s repertoire.

Most Europeans by contrast have grown up with ski in, ski out lodging as the norm. Alpine villages, and the ski areas they were associated with, grew alongside one another and developed into the large ski areas we know today. The ski resorts began as part of the centre of the town and naturally as new ski lifts and runs were added and more people wanted to ski, the towns expanded around them to accommodate their needs. Ski in, ski out properties just became a normal part of the expansion and although often commanding a premium prices are relatively easy to find.

Skiing in the US is increasing in popularity with the Europeans, but especially the Brits due its superior snow conditions and uncrowded slopes. 

Several US ski towns such as Breckenridge Telluride and Aspen started life as mining towns, before they grew into the world famous ski areas they are today. Steamboat Springs was originally a ranching town and still retains much of its Old West character. Many of these ski towns in the US were already established before the ski areas were developed, so the ski lifts are a mile or two from the town associated with them.

Winter Park was originally home to railway workers and gradually developed into a small town. The town is about 3 miles from the ski area, but an easy 5-10 minute free bus ride. The vast majority of accommodation is still in the town of Winter Park and the small towns of Fraser and Tabernash, a little further along US Highway 40. 

However, gradually the powers that be are recognising the importance and desirability of ski in, ski out accommodation.
