Mastering the art of the golf swing could be complicated and challenging, and you are most probably trying to improve yours. There are a couple of very simple errors in balance that most people make but can easily be avoided. Here are two simple tips on improving your balance and golf swing, as well as correct the basic slip-ups that you could be doing.

1. A Good Setup, A Good Balance, A Good Swing

A good tip for improving your golf swing would be improving your setup. A lot of golfers do not have a good balance because they started off from a bad setup. If you have a good and solid setup, you would be able to keep balanced as you swing. Maintaining your balance would give you a solid swing plane as well as a good pivot. Make sure keep your whole body under control during your setup so you could improve your balance and swing.

2. Swinging Too Hard

Although having great distance is essential, having perfect control of your swing is equally important. What usually happens is since you want distance, you give your all you can when you swing. This causes you to wheel around and lose your balance, as you swing too hard. What you would need to do is trust your club. It is already designed to send the ball to great lengths so you would need to focus on making your swing as solid, as steady and as balanced as possible to stay in the fairway.

Swinging on plane is a big key to hitting solid golf shots. The first thing that needs to be correct is your setup. A good setup position with a correct grip, good angles, and proper alignment will all aid you in swinging on plane correctly.

Starting your backswing on plane requires a slow smooth takeaway with the arms and shoulders. At the point where the golf club is parallel to the ground in the beginning of your backswing, the golf club should cover up your hands if you were looking in a mirror or someone was standing behind you this is what you would see. If the clubhead is too far in front of your hands, it is too far outside the plane line. If the clubhead is too far behind your hands, the club will be inside too much. Both of these incorrect positions will cause problems with keeping the club on the correct swing plane during the rest of your swing.

Halfway into the backswing, your hands should be set in the middle of your chest. Also, from this halfway back position, if you drew a straight line down from your left elbow (for the right handed golfer), it should point right at the golf ball. If your left elbow is pointing more towards your feet, your swing plane is too steep. If your elbow is pointing too far out away from the ball, your swing plane is going to be too laid off or flat. This is a great drill you can use to make sure you are starting your backswing on plane correctly.

For many golfers, a big concern is how to hit the ball farther. Typically, a good swing with solid fundamentals will naturally allow you to hit the ball far provided you have good strength. There are a few important keys that you can specifically work on to hit it farther.

The first key I recommend is having good angles in your setup or swing. A good setup will have good knee flex and a correct bend from the hips with the weight on the balls of your feet. A good setup is a critical component to not only swinging more on the correct path but also hitting it farther. You want to have a good shoulder turn on the backswing where your shoulders turn a full 90 degrees. This will allow you to swing the golf club over your shoulder and maintain good angles at the top of your backswing as well. From there, you’ll be in a powerful position to swing back down through the golf ball.

Second key is swing speed. You want to make sure you are swinging fastest at the point of impact. Many golfers make the mistake of rushing their backswing, making it too fast and then from their it is forced to slow down coming into the golf ball when it should be speeding up at this point. One key on timing of your swing is the backswing should be three times as long as the downswing. Tour players were studied and it was recorded that they all have this correct tempo where their backswing all are three times as long as their downswings. Make sure not to try to swing too hard from the top of your backswing. Often times golfers try to hit the ball too hard resulting in lots of problems when hitting the golf ball. You want to have a nice and smooth transition and allow the swing speed to increase as you are nearing the impact position. This will maximize your chances of hitting the ball longer and straighter.

Third key is creating lag in your swing. You do this by hinging your wrists in the backswing which allows you to build up “leverage”. Then on the downswing your hands will actually lead into the golf ball before the club hits the ball. With the hands slightly ahead at impact, you’ll be assured of a solid strike which will make the golf ball travel farther.

All great golfers will do certain things really well in their setup and their golf swing. Common elements that all the pros have include a good setup. A fundamentally correct setup consists of having a good grip, correct alignment, good posture, as well as having good ball position in your stance. Often times just making adjustments in your setup will be half the battle in getting your swing more on the correct path. When you are misaligned in your setup, you’ll have to make compensations in your swing to offset it which will never really allow you to reach your potential.

The swing plane is a common thing many golf instructors talk about when referring to the path of the golf swing. Basically, swinging the club on plane correctly consists of a good takeaway and wrist set, and then swinging the club over the right shoulder in the backswing(for the right-handed golfer). The impact position should mirror the setup position other than the hips will be slightly open and the hands forwards and a little ahead of the golf ball through the hit. After impact, the club continues to swing all the way over the left shoulder and the body should end up facing directly towards the target.

I like to encourage my students to swing with good balance and smooth rhythm. You never want to swing so hard that you find yourself off balance anytime during your golf swing. Typically the backswing will be about three times as long as the downswing. You want the club to swing fastest right when it is at the bottom of the swing arc hitting the golf ball.

Having a balanced golf swing is really a big key secret to hitting successful golf shots.

When you can swing naturally and smoothly, you’ll be able to maintain a balanced golf swing and become much more consistent.

When golfers hit bad shots, a lot of times they are off balance. Either they swung too hard, trying to kill the ball, or they tried to manipulate the golf club unnaturally in some way.

Here are some keys that can help you stay more balanced in your golf swing:

At the setup position, make sure your weight is on the balls of your feet. This is critical not only for staying in balance but also for swinging the club on the correct path. Having your weight too far forward on your toes or too far back on your heels will make your swing path get off track and the only way to hit a good shot will be to make compensations for it in your swing.

Good tempo is something all the touring professionals have. A golfer who maintains proper tempo in their swing can really gain a tremendous amount of distance and accuracy. It’s not about swinging as hard as you can to hit it far. In fact, trying to swing too hard will almost always work against you. If you lose your balance, that golf club is getting off path and you’ll suffer from inconsistency with your golf shots.

If you ever watch the pros on TV, they have a knack for making the golf swing look effortless. This is because their swing tempos are so smooth. No one is trying to kill the ball or swing 100% as hard as they possibly can. A lot of amateurs could benefit greatly by simply learning to slow their golf swings down a bit and consequently stay more balanced.

The percentage of hitting good shots goes way up when you don’t need to compensate and simply swing your golf club on the correct path in the backswing and the downswing.

Playing your best golf is very fulfilling and here is some golf swing advice on how to do it. First of all, you must learn to master the fundamentals. This includes having a proper grip, setup, and stance. Good alignment will help you hit your shots straighter and allow you to swing the club on the correct path more naturally and more easily.

Once you’ve gotten your golf swing setup fundamentals down, it’s time to learn some important keys to a proper golf swing. Make sure your golf swing has smooth tempo. Do not try to rush your swing and try to swing the same tempo on every shot.

Having a golf swing that is on plane will allow you to hit more consistent, straighter golf shots. To get the club on plane in your backswing, try to feel like you are swinging the club directly over your right shoulder. On the follow through, you should simply mirror the backswing and swing the golf club over your left shoulder to finish your swing. When golfers swing the club too steeply or too much around their bodies it becomes difficult to get the club into the proper impact position for any kind of consistency.

A proper turn and weight shift are essential components of a good swing as well. Make sure you turn and shift so you feel your weight go to the inside part of your back foot. If your weight rolls towards the outside of your foot you have moved too much laterally and are probably trying to force your turn incorrectly. A proper shoulder to hip turn ratio is 2 to 1. This means the shoulders should turn twice as far as the hips do in the golf backswing. Generally, a good golfer will be able to turn their shoulders a full 90 degrees. The hips will then have turned half that distance or 45 degrees.

Good swing sequence can help any golf significantly improve their direction with their golf shots and hit the ball much straighter. Because the shoulders turn twice as far as the hips do in the golf swing, the shoulders must start their turn first. Ideally, the golf club is swung back in the takeaway, then the shoulders start to turn and about halfway back into the backswing the hips turn. You always want the golf club to lead in the golf swing. You clubs swings and your body responds or follow the club. Turning the body before swinging the club up in the backswing leads to being out of sync and a loss of power and consistency with your golf shots will result.

Once you’ve mastered your golf fundamentals including the setup, swing plane, and swing sequence, you’ll be well on your way to playing great golf and shooting low scores on a regular basis.
