Are Commercial Air Hockey Tables Better?

Air hockey is mostly a fast-paced competitive sport, designed to pattern ice hockey, yet which may be easily experienced without use of a rink. Commercial air hockey tables are located at arcades, restaurants, bars, homes, recreation areas and even university dorms around the world, and they are the key piece of equipment needed to play. Besides commercial air hockey tables, pucks and mallets will be essential for play.

For any individual presently thinking about purchasing a commercial air hockey table for their arcade or business, they’ll have to start by researching a few of the best providers. Commercial air hockey tables are produced by quite a few businesses, such as Valley-Dyamo, Playcraft, Sportcraft and Carrom. Valley-Dyamo-made tables are the only commercial air hockey tables presently authorized for play by the United States Air Hockey Association (USAA), but tables manufactured and built by other producers no doubt do compare. As with every product, several of these suppliers are offering more of a luxury unit, while others, such as Carrom, are considered more of an affordable unit that is best suited to newbie individuals.

Commercial air hockey tables posses very little air slots covering the playing surface area. Air is moved through the openings resulting in a cushion of air which allows the air hockey puck to slide slightly over the surface area with little to basically no friction. The result of this air system is more rapid play, making air hockey a notoriously quick activity. Commercial air hockey table brands, such a Valley-Dynamo and Carrom ordinarily add more features to their tables not commonly employed in residential-use tables that make the game a whole lot more exhilarating, for example, a higher output air blower that makes for the least potential friction and more regular air flow.

Commercial air hockey tables also come with the possibility of coin-operation slots, black light capabilities, LED scoreboards, sharp graphics along with audio, all of which further enhance player experience for making this already lively contest even more fun.

When pruchasing a commercial air hockey table for almost any establishment, consumers need to look into both room restrictions in addition to cost conditions. Air hockey tables are for sale for two to four people, with the four player table being notably bigger than the standard table. The 4 person tables are great for novelty, however if the company ever expects to get into event play, they must realize that four person commercial air hockey tables are not certified or permitted by the United States Air Hockey Association for tournament play.

If a commercial air hockey table buyer wants fairly simple entertainment instead of tournament play, customized game tables that come with television characters and various other images are also offered, including sound files and pictures to match.

Which Of The Carrom Air Hockey Tables Is Best For Your Family?

The thing that amazes me most about air hockey is how quickly it became popular and main stream in America. Air hockey was invented by a trio of Brunswick engineers (Phil Crossman, Bob Kendrick, and Brad Baldwin) between 1969 and 1971, and was an immediate success. The United States Air-Table Hockey Association (USAA) was formed in 1975 to ensure uniform play standards, and the first World Championships were held a few years later in 1978. I was too young to realize how new it was, but I remember in the mid-1970’s that it was all my brother wanted for Christmas, and Santa Claus delivered.

Today there are a lot of companies that make air hockey tables, and some of the professional tables can be quite expensive. But there are also a lot of tables that are great for home use. One of the companies that is well known for good quality home game tables is Carrom. There are three Carrom air hockey tables available to purchase. Let’s take a look at these three tables.

The first of the Carrom air hockey tables is the Carrom 7’ Signature Air Powered Hockey Table. Carrom boasts that this “table has it all”. The table has electronic scoring that celebrates goals with lights and sound, and ships with both two puck and two hand controller styles, for the beginner and advanced players. There is a 2″ drop to the play surface for an arena type feel. Some of the other features of this table include:

The second of the Carrom air hockey tables available is similar to the first. The MSRP is a little bit more, but I have also seen it on some web sites for a bit less than the first table. It is the 7″ Signature Air Powered Hockey Prof. It is sometimes described by Carrom as “the perfect game table for the expert hockey player”. It also had a 2″ drop play surface and ships with two different styles of pucks and hand controllers.

All of the basic features of the first table are the same. The main difference is in the look of these two Carrom air hockey tables. This table has a wood finish (the first table has more of a black marbled finish), and the legs are different. The legs on this second table have a more substantial look, shaped like a wedge and covered in black vinyl. This table is also a bit heavier, weighing in a 230 lbs.

For the last of the Carrom air hockey tables, the Carrom Company teamed up with NASCAR® . So if you are a NASCAR fan, then this is the table for you! Many of the basic features are the same as the first table, but the NASCAR table features exclusive artwork by Sam Bass, a renowned motor sports artist. His artwork makes this one cool looking air hockey table! The entire table is black (including the play surface) with bright NASCAR graphics. It also weighs in at 205 lbs, though it does not have the cup holders. The price point on the NASCAR table comes in about $150 – $200 more than the other two tables.

So, if you are looking for a game table for your family, check out the Carrom air hockey tables, you are bound to find a good table that your entire family will enjoy. And remember, they all come with a 1 year warranty!

Air Hockey Tables: Christmas of 1977

It was the Christmas of 1977, I was 9 years old, and my older brother got an air hockey table from Santa. We were just at the age when we were pretty sure that we knew the truth about Santa Claus and were determined to stay up and catch him in the act. We lived in a tri-level house, and my brother’s room was on the first floor, right by the entry way and the family room. He had bunk beds, so I slept downstairs in his room with plans not to sleep that night. We laid in our beds and chatted excitedly but quietly (Christmas Eve is not the time to get in trouble, just in case Santa was real!) Every now and then we would quietly open the door and sneak up the stairs to peak into the living room. But always it was the same, quiet and no change. It was going to be a long night.

I guess we must have fallen asleep, though I still don’t remember actually sleeping. It was around 4:30 in the morning when Matthew and I snuck out of the room. We crept upstairs, and sure enough, Santa had been there while we were sleeping! Santa always brought us one present each, and we easily located my gift and the gifts for our two little sisters, but nothing for Matthew. As we went back down to Matthew’s room, we spotted something in the Family Room. Yes, and air hockey table–we were so excited!

My parents always had a rule on Christmas morning. We could get up early and play with our Santa gift, but we had to wait until 8:00 before we could wake them up. So here it was, about 4:30 or 5:00 in the morning, and Matthew and I were playing air hockey and having a blast! But my mom’s memory of it isn’t as fun. It just so happened that our parent’s room was on the third floor, right above the family room (typical tri-story house layout), and of course, the heating vent ran right from the family room to their bedroom. So Mom and Dad had been up late and were trying to finally get some sleep, and all they can hear is a clickity-click-click-click! Needless to say, we were sent back to bed and had to wait to play until later.

But that air hockey table was the most popular and memorable Christmas gift of all time, one that I still remember more than any other. It provided hours of family fun. As kids we would hold tournaments, and the more neighbor kids involved, the better. Our home was always one where everyeone hung out anyhow, so the air hockey table was an added bonus. We probably didn’t play with official rules, but we had a lot of fun, making up our own rules and games as only a child can. But  unlike child’s toys, there was no age limit to those who enjoyed playing, and the game never got old because new opponents brought on new challenges.

For great family time, air hockey tables can’t be beat. I know that it brought us hours of fun when I was growing up, and brought us together as a family. Plus, we still enjoy the air hockey table with the telling of the story, and laugh at Matthew and I playing very early on Christmas morning and waking up our parents with a clickity-clack!

Game Play On Competitive Air Hockey Tables

I remember playing air hockey as a kid, and having a lot of fun, though I do not remember having any specific guidelines that we played by, we just went at it in fierce (but fun) competition. Air hockey tables had been around for less than eight years when air hockey became a competitive sport. Rules and game play are governed by the USAA (United States Air-Table-Hockey Association). For tournament play, only the 8 foot air hockey tables manufactured by Dynamo are sanctioned. Approved tables include the Photon, Pro-Style, older Blue Top, Brown Top, Purple Top or Black Top with unpainted rails.

Besides a table, the only other equipment needed are two mallets (one for each player) and a puck. The most common mallet looks like a sombrero, and as a kid, I would grip the top part tightly as I chased the puck around the table. But this is not how the professionals do it. In competitive play, the mallet is gripped behind the knob using just your fingertips. This allows for more wrist action so that the mallet can be moved around the table faster.

I learned that this mallet grip, and a few other things sets competitive play apart from us recreational users. I also discovered a few other helpful tips to improve my game, things that professional players do on their air hockey tables.

For basic defense, competitive players often use the triangle defense. The mallet is kept centered about 8 inches front of the goal. This means only slight movements are needed to protect the goal from straight shots, and bank shots can be prevented by quickly pulling the mallet back towards the corners of the goal.

The top air hockey players are very good on the offense with drifting. Drifting is when you control the puck on your side of the table by moving the puck in a set pattern, which allows you to knock the puck down the table in a variety of attacks. This can throw off your opponent since they do not know how you will deliver the final blow on the puck. Very slight differences in wrist movement can affect which way the puck will go. Some of the more popular drifts are the center, diamond (or circle), “L”, and diagonal drifts.

As an example, on the diamond drift the puck is moved clockwise in a diamond shape, being contacted by the mallet twice, once at the top and once at the bottom. The reverse diamond moves the puck in the same pattern, but counter-clockwise. Both of these drifts encourage shots from several points on the table, and with only minor adjustments can utilize time delays, change-ups, and other techniques.

A final strategy used by top players on air hockey tables are shots that are organized into “combos”. This means a group of shots which appear to be hit with the same delivery but in opposite directions. This is caused by hitting the puck at slightly different locations on the mallet. Now, I hadn’t thought of this before but it makes sense that where the puck is struck on the mallet (since it is curved) would affect the direction of the puck.

Though there are probably a lot more tips, these are enough to get started to improve my game. The next time I am around some air hockey tables, I will try the looser grip, and some drifting techniques to see if I can confuse my opponent!
